Pitney Bowes Business Insight
Overview

CallingAreaInfo quickly calculates a comprehensive analysis that allows users to easily identify and understand local calling areas and plans without spending weeks pouring over reams of cryptic tariff and regulatory data. This product demystifies complex technical, engineering data and makes it simple to use, delivering data that is instantly meaningful and upon which organizations, such as telecommunications service providers, can take action.

Product Description

CallingAreaInfo maps the local calling plans available to business and residential customers when calling out from or into a location. Calling plans are the rate structures that determine which phone numbers can call which other phone numbers and at what rates. Most Local Exchange Carriers (LECs) offer more than one calling plan for each NPA/NXX combination they serve. CallingAreaInfo also distinguishes local calls based on cost and status, including Free, Toll, Time of Day and Holiday.

CallingAreaInfo allows the user to visualize the calling area from two perspectives:

  • Examine the local calling plan for calls that originate from a location (exchange), also called outbound calling areas, and
  • Identify and map the exchanges that include a specific location (exchange) in their calling plans, also called inbound calling areas.

Major functions of CallingAreaInfo include:

  • Generate an outbound or an inbound calling area database for a location based upon NPA/NXX, rate center, exchange, or clicking on a map
  • Direct access to call plan data
  • Create a map of the generated calling area
  • Generate calling area databases for multiple locations in a batch run
  • Print a report based on a CallingAreaInfo output database

About Local Calling

A calling plan is the rate structure that determines which phone numbers can call which other numbers and at what rates. Most Local Exchange Carriers (LECs) offer more than one calling plan for each NPA/NXX combination they serve. The NPA represents the Area Code, the NXX is the Exchange.

Local calls are ones in which a long distance provider is not necessary. However, there are both free and toll local calls and it is important to differentiate between them.

These rates are further impacted by the time of day of the call, holiday status, initial cost/duration of the call and overtime cost/duration. Time of day does not affect the geography that corresponds to the rate steps, but it can affect the actual rate being charged for the call. In addition, some calling plans offer different rates for holidays.
